Hello All. I moved here recently from NYC and miss some of the elements of
big city life... are there any vegan/vegetarian and/or buddhist associations
or groups here? How about "new age" groups and places? Thanks for any info.
Not to put Pgh down, as I have enjoyed myself here, but I sure would like to
be involved with associations or groups of like-minded people in my free
time.
Thanks!

There is a Pittsburgh vegetarian group on Yahoo.
Obviously you have internet access. Try searching for Vegan and
Pittsburgh. Let me know if you find any good places to eat. I'm always
hungry.

Not being difficult... but I actually went to the East End co-op on
Saturday... no luck at the notice boards etc; and looking at the shoppers
and groceries there, it is more an actual grocery place like Giant Eagle,
than the average coops- for example... www.greenstar.com I guess I'm still
needing more info about vegan and/or buddhist groups... Pgh is a tough
little city :( :(

Yeah, I came across that group also ... but if you look in their archive,
there is not much activity. Besides few members, and their main activity
seems to be a pot luck once every few weeks... I was hoping for something
more :)

At this point, I am inclined to think that the vegans and buddhists in pgh
are still "in" the closet :(

We don't have closed down streets and school cancellations over vegan
events, but if you take the time and effort to get to know some people, I
think you'll find enough support and camaraderie.
Don't expect a huge website with 50 links to different activities every day
of the week. Pgh is not a vegan "Mecca" but for the person who isn't shy
and isn't too lazy to do some footwork, there's plenty in Pgh.
If you really want to meet like-minded people, the PGH.* newsgroups are not
the best places. The groups all have merit, but they aren't great "meet
markets" if you know what I mean. We pretty much just have typing wars
here. You got to get out there. Quiet Storm, Zenith, EEFC cafe, Maggies,
etc. go up and start talking to someone. Pgh people are friendly like
that. You'll be fine.

Thing is, when I move to a city, I always find something on usenet, yahoo
groups or google, where you get to know things like vegan friendly shops and
restaurants, buddhist events etc. With pgh, the one or two groups/sites I
came up with, have zero activity. Here, even if I keep my eyes and ears open
as I move around the city, nothing just catches my eye.

There are scattered groups, but (as a vegetarian) I find there's less
emphasis on veggie groups and more emphasis on just enjoying what this
city has to offer.

Good places for a veggie: Maggie's in Oakland, Sree's Foods in Squirrel
Hill, Hunan Kitchen in Sq Hill, East End Food Coop and its Cafe, Mad Mex
in Oakland, etc.

There's plenty of good stuff here, especially in the East End of town.

As for Buddhist stuff, I couldn't say. Not a Buddhist. :)

Yeah, that is precisely the sense I was getting... you can find veggie
friendly places, but not much in terms of activities/groups/advocacy etc...
.Same deal for buddhist places also.

There used to be something called "Veggie Dining Out" which was every
year, about 30 or so restaurants would all submit dishes and it would be
one big buffet, but they didnt' have it last year.

But again, there are a lot of veggie friendly places in the east end.
Plenty of stuff to enjoy.

For Buddhist stuff, I really just don't know. Read the Dharmapada, read a
book by the Dalai Lama, but since I can't wrap my head around
reincarnation, I never fell into it.

Taoism was always more my speed. :)

Zorro,

I'm neither a vegetarian nor a Buddhist, and lots of people have
already offered some good suggestions, but I thought I might add my
personal two cents in support of The Quiet Storm. The food there is
quite good, even to my carnivorous tastebuds. Plus, it's a great place
to see both national and local music acts. (Pittsburgh's local music
and arts scenes are among the city's best kept secrets, IMHO.) Whoever
is working behind the counter might be able to point you in the right
direction of what you're looking for. Their website is here:

Good luck,
Phil

I've tried just about everything on the Sunday brunch menu and it's
always been good - even the fake meat items like "soysage". During the
week the soups, and especially the bread that comes with them, are out
of this world.

Here are two links to groups in Pittsburgh you might be interested in.

http://www.pittsburghvegetariansociety.org/
http://www.animaladvocates.net/

I used to belong to the Pittsburgh Vegetarian Society but found it not to my
liking. I am vegetarian mostly for health concerns, not as much an animal
activist - so these groups aren't for me. The latter group is really
hardcore about animal activism.

Anyway, welcome to Pittsburgh and I hope you find many like-minded people.

Thanks for your suggestions folks. Particularly those who suggested the
quietstorm. place is cool; food is nice; but still drawing a blank for
"active" groups...
